Abstract
1395836 Making corrugated paperboard laminates HARRIS-INTERTYPE CORP 22 May 1973 [14 June 1972] 24400/73 Heading B5N In the manufacture of corrugated paperboard by heat-bonding a liner to a single-face web (which may be single, double or triple wall), in a double facer machine, the liner and bonding agent are heated by the heat source and the liner temperature is then measured, at a point between the inlet and outlet of the double facer, with a heat sensor without physically touching the liner; the temperature signal so generated is compared with a preset value indicative of desired temperature; and the heat transmitted to the liner is regulated as a result of the comparison. As shown, the liner 29 is pressed to the single-face web 28 and against steam chests 22, 24 by a belt 12 and ballast rollers 42, 46, 50, 52; it may be pre-heated and the bonding agent may be starch solution. The steam chests are pivoted at 32 (or reciprocated) by the action of a cylinder 36 to bring them into and out of contact with the paperboard. The rollers 42, 46, 50 are supported on interconnected lever arms which are pivoted on a manifold 52 that is moveable by a cylinder to increase or decrease the roller pressure or to move the rollers out of contact with the belt 12. The roller 62, extending over part only of the belt width, is similarly controlled from a cylinder 68. The liner temperature is measured by one or more sensors 70, e.g. infra-red thermometers whose voltage signal is fed to a control device 76, which controls the flow of air to cylinders 36, 58, 68 as a result of comparing the signal with a set signal 82. The cylinder 68 is responsive to a separate sensor at the edge of the belt.
