Balancing.-In a lift means are provided for automatically removing from and replacing in each cage a weight equal to the load carried after the load has been put into or taken out of the cage. When a single counterweighted cage is used, the cage f, Fig. 1, is suspended from a float e placed in a tank d which rests on a platform b, suspended from the hoisting rope c. When the cage is empty, the liquid in the tank is at the level of the discharge pipe g, but, when a load is put on at any platform B, a quantity of liquid equal in weight to the load will be discharged into the tank h. When this load is discharged at a platform A, Fig. 3, the float e will rise and the level of the liquid in the tank d will fall. The tank is then connected to the outlet i of the tank h at this floor, and liquid is allowed to flow until the tank d is again filled to the level of its outlet g. Before taking on a load at this floor, the cage is raised to the platform B, so that the liquid discharged will flow into the tank h. In a two-cage lift system, Fig. 6, the tank h floats in a tank h<1>, and the tank d communicates with the tank h when the cage is at rest by a non-emptying syphon m. When the cage is moving, the syphon m is held in raised position clear of the liquid by an electro-magnet which is energized only during the travel of the cage. A small float keeps the lift circuit open until the liquid in the tanks d, h is at the same level.
