Abstract

1395014 Wells DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc 22 Nov 1972 [20 Dec 1971] 54054/72 Heading E1F A gripping member for a well tool having an elongated tool body (12), Fig. 1A (not shown), and spaced first and second abutments 42, 22 mounted for relative movement towards each other and adapted for use in any conduit having an inside diameter within a given range of inside diameters, comprises a body member 30 adapted to encircle a portion of the tool body (12) between the abutments and adapted for pivotal mounting thereon between set and unset positions, the body member having first and second ends 40, 32 engageable with the abutments to pivot the body member, and a plurality of spaced conduit-engaging ribs 34, 36 located adjacent each end of the body member, the ribs having a curved bounding profile such that each conduit-engaging rib is engageable with a conduit of internal diameter within said range. The first end 40 is provided with abutment-engaging portions 40a, 40b, 40c which tend to pivot the member 30 into the set position, and the second end 32 is provided with abutment-engaging portions 32a, 32b, 32c which tend to pivot the member into the unset position. The force applied on the conduit by the gripping member is substantially constant for all of the internal diameters of said predetermined range by virtue of the locations of the abutment-engaging portions.
