Abstract

1394635 Lubricating IC engine valve gear DAIMLER-BENZ AG 19 Sept 1973 [27 Sept 1972] 44006/73 Heading FIB [Also in Division F2] I.C. engine lubricating oil supplied via duct 13 to a reservoir 12 of an hydraulic automatic backlash adjuster pillar 4 is passed through a defoaming device 19 for the removal of air, and then fed via a one-way valve 11 to the usual pressure chamber 10 of the hydraulic adjuster pillar 4. As shown, the defoaming device 19 comprises a slow-pitch helix arranged to decelerate the oil flow from the inlet ports 20 downwards through the helix 19 so that defoaming occurs, the defoamed oil then passing through a central tube 21 to the one-way valve 11, air separated from the lubricating oil in the space 18 being drawn through the ports 20 into the reservoir space 12 and passes with the oil flow through a passage 14 and ducts 15, 16 to a rocker arm pivot bearing 9 where air can leave the bearing through a duct 22, oil leaving this duct 22 serving to lubricate the cam track. The hydraulic adjuster pillar 4 provides zero-lash for an overhead camshaft I.C. engine valve operating mechanism of the type in which a rocker arm 2 has one end 14 pivotally mounted on the bearing 9 of a plunger 8 extending from the pillar 4, the other end engaging a valve stem 3, and a portion of its upper surface between its ends engaging a cam 1. Alternative defoaming devices located in a similar manner within the adjuster pillar 4 are illustrated in Figs. 2 to 5 (not shown) in which Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate two forms of labyrinth (23 and 26) and Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate steel-wool and paper filters (27 and 28) respectively, two staggered sets of ports (24, 25) being provided such that the lower ports (24) serve for the inflow of lubricating oil and the upper ports (25) for the discharge of separated air.
