Abstract
1394596 Strengthening masonry &c IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 Oct 1973 [6 Nov 1972] 51045/72 Heading E1S [Also in Division F2] In a method of strengthening or repairing a mass of hard material, e.g. rock, masonry, artificial stone, sculpture, a strengthening rod 10 is rotatably inserted into a drilled hole 15 in the material by means of a readily detachable end piece 11 to bring the point of attachment of the end piece level with or below the mouth of the hole, the part of the rod other than the end piece is bonded to the wall of the hole, and the end piece is detached. The outer end of the rod 10 is then concealed by filling the mouth of the hole with a hardening grout (Fig. 6, not shown). Preferably the inner end of the rod is bonded to the wall of the hole by a quick-setting resin or cement, the rod then being tensioned by a nut 24, tightened by a torque spanner, until a slower setting resin or cement has bonded the rest of the rod to the wall of the hole. When this latter bonding is complete, the end piece 11 is detached. The bonding is by capsules of resin and hardener, the hardener capsules being within the resin capsules. The capsules of quick-setting resin are inserted into the hole first, followed by the capsules of the slower setting resin. The resin may be an epoxy, polyester, or polyurethane resin, or an hydraulic cement. The end piece 11 may be integrally connected to the rod 10 by a neck 11, as shown, the neck being fractured by further tightening of the nut 24 when bonding is complete, or the end piece may be detachably connected to the rod by a screw-threaded or bayonet connection (Figs. 2, 3, not shown).
