Abstract

1323031 Reinforcing rock formations C I WILLIAMS 19 April 1971 [3 Feb 1970] 20431/71 Heading F2H A method of securing a rock formation in position includes the operations of drilling a hole 31 and of installing in the hole 31 a bolt rod 34 equipped with an anchoring device 33 followed by the sequence (a) fixing the device 33 in the hole 31, (b) tensioning the rod 34 to a prestress of at least 67% of the yield point of the rod 34 and (c) grouting the rod 34 and device 33 in the hole 31 to substantially fill the hole with grout around the rod 34. The grout is preferably delivered into the hole at the lower end thereof through a conduit 39 into the space between the rod and the walls of the hole, and continued under pressure until grout fills up the hole throughout the length of the rod 34 and device 33. Subsequently the flow of grout is plugged while in liquid form to permit it to set under pressure in the hole. As described the method is performed using the rock bolt assembly of Specification 1,323,033 with the anchoring device of Specification 1,323,037. For an oversize hole the adapter of Specification 1,323,034 is used and, if the rod is assembled by coupling several sections of rod, back rotation of the couplings, should it be necessary to unclamp the anchoring device, is avoided in accordance with the invention of Specification 1,323,036.
