Abstract
1394161 Teaching machines C E M HANSEL 14 Sept 1972 [17 Sept 1971] 43506/71 Heading G5G A teaching machine has selectors, e.g. push buttons 34, for selecting the answer to a set question from among a number of possible answers, and includes a memory which in a teaching mode of operation can be set by use of the appropriate selector with a correct answer which is retained in the memory for use during a subsequent examining mode. A programme sheet, with questions and answers in appropriate positions, is placed on the machine and is covered by a screen. A light behind a question (or answer), makes it visible to the pupil and the questions are lit in sequence. In operation, the machine is first programmed with the answers to the questions. A switch 36 is set to its "teach" position T and the first question is asked by applying a signal to the corresponding input terminal 32 which causes the question to be displayed. A push button 34, corresponding to the correct answer, is then operated to record this answer in a corresponding memory unit 30. This process is repeated until the answers to all the questions have been recorded. The switch 36 is then set to its "examine" position E. The first question is then asked by applying a signal to the corresponding terminal 32 and the pupil selects an answer by operating one of the push buttons 34. If his choice is correct a signal at terminal 52 causes the machine to advance to the next question; if not, a signal appears at terminal 58 which causes the question to be repeated, and the correct answer or a prompt is displayed. Each memory unit 30 comprises four NOR gates, including two arranged as a bi-stable latch, and is associated as shown with further logic elements so that appropriate signals at terminals 52 and 58 appear in response to inputs at terminals 32 and push buttons 34. In a modification, the memory units 30 are replaced by shift registers. The machine may also be used with auditory presentation, questions and answers being recorded on multi-track tape loops, or in a combined audio-visual mode.
