Abstract

139,414. Moody, L. F. Aug. 18, 1919. Screw motors; casings; regulating; working- fluid supply.-An hydraulic turbine comprises a screw rotor 45, Fig. 1, mounted upon a vertical shaft. Water is admitted bv way of a volute inlet channel 43 to fixed directing vanes 83. The discharge conduit 47 is also volute-shaped and is provided with fixed diffusion vanes 40. Regulation is effected by a fluid-operated cylindrical valve 28 which partially or wholly masks the vanes 33. The vanes 33, 40, together with their metal shrouding rings, act as supports for the concrete structure which contains the turbine. The vanes 33, 40 may be of varying obliquity along their length. The lower end of the turbine shaft is mounted in a lignum vitµ step-bearing 14 to which water under pressure is led by a pipe 49 for the purpose of cooling the bearing and washing away sand or other deposit. In a modification, the rotor 63, Fig. 5, is mounted upon a horizontal shaft. Water is admitted bv way of a conduit 62 to fixed directing vanes 60. The discharge channel 66 is volute-shaped and is fitted with a ring of fixed diffusion vanes 68. In this modification, the fluid-operated regulating-valve 76 (shown in the closed position) is situated behind the rotor.
