1394063 Windage losses with squirrel cage rotors LAURENCE, SCOTT & ELECTROMOTORS Ltd J P PESTLE and K K SCHWARZ 13 Oet 1972 [13 Oct 1971] 47739/71 Heading H2A In a squirrel cage rotor system wherein the axial cage bars 3 and the end ring 4 are allowed to "float" relative to the rotor core 1 in order to accommodate thermal and centrifugal stresses, windage losses caused by air/gas/liquid flow through gaps in the structure, e.g. along the path arrowed in Fig. 1 (not shown) are reduced by mounting a flexible ring 8, Fig. 2, on a carrier 9 fixed to an end closing plate 6 such that the gap between the shrink ring 5 and the rotor core hub 7 is sealed. In alternative embodiments (Figs. 3-7, not shown), sealing is effected by bellows, or piston/slot arrangements.
