Abstract

1393989 Casting composite articles MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AG 19 April 1972 [19 April 1971] 18218/72 Heading B3F A method of centrifugally casting a hollow composite body comprises arranging a fibrous material reinforcement around the inside of a rotatable drum 2, introducing a first metal through the nozzles 4 of a device 3 to form a first layer 14 consisting of the fibrous material embedded in a matrix of the first metal, thereafter introducing a second metal through the nozzles 4 to form a second layer 15 around the inside of the first layer, and continuing rotation of the drum until the second layer has solidified and hardened. The fibrous material may be in the form of an endless wound fibre, stable fibre or fibre matting made of tungsten, beryllium, steel, boron, carbon or silicon carbide and may be initially located in a skeleton frame in the drum, the frame consisting of the same metal as the said first metal. The first and second metals may be alloys consisting principally of nickel, cobalt, titanium or aluminium, the second metal having a coefficient of expansion which is equal to or higher than that of the first. In the latter case compressive stress is formed in the first layer and a tensile stress in the second layer. The device 3 is provided with a heating coil 7 and a mixing chamber 6 into which are fed the metals to be cast. It may be rotated and moved axially within the drum 2 during the casting process. The process may be carried out in a vacuum or inert atmosphere.
