Abstract

1393838 Gripping straps SIGNODE CORP 16 Aug 1973 [16 Aug 1972] 38777/73 Heading B8C [Also in Division E2] A gripping mechanism for holding a strap and increasing the gripping force as tension is applied to the strap comprises an anvil 38, and a pair of jaws 20, 22 pivotable about pins 30 extending parallel with the longitudinal direction of the strap 42 into a position to clamp the strap against the anvil, the jaws being able in the clamping position to pivot about an axis normal to the longitudinal direction of, and parallel to the plane of the strap. The gripping surface 40 of the jaws is toothed and arcuate and arranged to exert a higher pressure on the strap as the jaws pivot about the normal axis. The jaws are permitted to pivot about the normal axis by the holes 32 through which the pins extend tapering towards reduced radius at the centre or one end, by the pins being barrel-shaped or being a loose fit in the holes or in their support, or by the pin and holes having matching spherical bearing surfaces.
