Abstract
1,160,384. Binding machines. SIGNODE CORP. 19 Jan., 1967 [23 May, 1966], No. 1955/67. Heading B8C. The strap-feeding wheel 50 (Fig. 1) which feeds strapping 30 into a binding machine, and which can be reversed to tension the strapping about the article to be bound, is so mounted that in both directions of rotation it moves into binding relation with a reaction member 62 guiding the strapping. The wheel 50 may be mounted through a link 52 from a pivot 54, the driving motor being carried on the wheel shaft 55, and the radius of curvature 72 of the reaction member 62 is then chosen to ensure binding. Alternatively a link 452 (Fig. 6) may be mounted through slots 453 on pins 454 so that in both directions of feed the feed wheel 450 tends to bind against a backing wheel 510. The single link 452 may be replaced by two links one joining each pin 454 to the shaft 455. The free end of the strapping may be gripped, during tensioning, between a fixed jaw 110 and a jaw formed on the backing member 62 which is pivoted at 70 so that the gripping action is effective only when the wheel 50 is driven in the tensioning direction. The fixed jaw 110 is withdrawn laterally when the bound article A is to be removed, and a guide 100 is pivoted on the backing member 62 for similar retraction. Springs may bias the links 52 &c.
