Abstract

1393723 Mixing; comminuting PLASTIC MOLDERS SUPPLY CO INC 17 March 1972 [31 March 1971 29 Oct 1971] 35389/74 Divided out of 1393721 Headings B1C and B2A [Also in Division C3] A process of making moulded pigmented plastic articles comprises (a) comminuting a solid pigment bar into fine shavings or powder, the bar being comprised of a fatty acid amidecoated pigment and having transverse dimensions between 0.25 and 2.5 inches, (b) immediately thereafter intermixing said shavings or powder with pieces of plastic in an amount 0.001-50 p.b.w. pigment per part plastic, the rate of feed of pigment being controlled in proportion to the amount of plastic, and (c) moulding the intermixture into an article. The pigment bar may be made by admixing the pigment with molten amide, pouring the liquid mixture into a mould, and cooling to solidify it. Alternatively the amide-coated pigment may be melted, and the melt injection moulded and solidified by cooling. Step (c) may involve thermomechanical forming. Parent Specification 1393721 discloses and claims fatty acid amide-coated pigment compositions in wafer form and in bar form and processes for making the same and incorporating them into thermoplastics. Specification 1393722 therefrom relates to apparatus for introducing the pigment into the thermoplastic.
