In operation high fluid pressure is applied along pipe 50 to extend piston-rod 47. At the end of the stroke the fluid pressure is turned off and low air pressure in pipe 51 returns piston 46 to its starting position. Pawl 31 is biased by spring 32 and during retraction plate 26 is caused to rotate such that the pawl moves from notch 27a to 27b. Fig. 1 shows the pressure system whereby actuation of lever 55 causes air pressure to move piston 60 which moves piston 62 to give the high hydraulic pressure in line 50. Gauge 57 can give an indication of the torque being applied. Fig. 7 shows another embodiment where the ratchet means is an extension 89 on wrench 88 and the pawl is a pin 85 in an extension 84 on piston-rod 82.
