Abstract
139,345. Dodge, H. C. April 15, 1919. Projectiles; projectile fuses.-Relates to tracers, that is devices for indicating the flight of projec. tiles, of the kind comprising a tubular plug mounted in the base of the projectile and containing a tracer composition at its forward or inner end, and behind this a primer pellet held forward by a frangible device which yields to the shock of discharge and allows the primer pellet to set back and strike a firing-pin. According to the invention, the tracer composition 13 is contained in a casing 12 loose in the plug B and connected to the primer pellet 14 so as to add its mass to the pellet and thereby to increase the force of its set back on discharge. The primer pellet is normally held in place by a perforated disk 17 and a plug 19 which carries a firing-pin 20, and is sealed by a disk 22 and a cup 21. When the projectile is discharged, the plug 19 is held up to a shoulder 18 in the body B of the tracer bv the pressure of the gun gases', while the cartridge 13 sets back and is ignited by the percussion cap 15 striking the firing-pin. When the projectile leaves the gun, the pressure of the gases generated by the cartridge 13 expels the plug 19 and keeps the cartridge home inside the body B.
