1393439 Storage ponds SIEMENS AG 28 Nov 1972 [30 Nov 1971] 55017/72 Heading B4Q A vessel for containing radioactive material under cover of water is provided with a sheetform member for covering the free surface of the water when the vessel is in use to inhibit passage of water vapour from the vessel into the atmosphere above the said member. The sheet form member may be made of plastics material and fitted over a buoyant frame adapted to float on the water when the vessel is in use. The buoyant frame may be made of polyethylene or inflatable tubing. For covering tanks such as fuel element tanks (Figs. 1, not shown), a sheet-form member having the shape of an air mattress 8 is more suitable. As shown in Fig. 5, this may comprise two sheets 9 and 10, the sheet 9 facing the water in the container consisting of a material permeable to water vapour (e.g. cellulose products), and the sheet 10 remote from the water of a material (e.g. plastics), which is to a considerable extent proof against water vapour diffusion. Vapour containing radioactive substances and penetrating into the cavities of the air mattress 8 can be drawn off via outlets valves 11. In addition it may be expedient to connect to a device for suctional extraction the cavities below the air mattress 8, delimited by the free surface of the water and by the sheet 9. The air mattress 8 may be relieved of pressure by a device consisting of a winding reel 12 and two rollers 13 and 14 pressed against each other by spring pressure. During the rolling of the air mattress on to the reel 12 the air cushions between the sheets 9 and 10 are compressed by the rollers 13 and 14, so that the included gas escapes out of the outlet valves 11.
