1393393 Coloured detergent compositions COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO 15 June 1972 [18 June 1971] 28030/72 Heading C5D A detergent composition comprises a synthetic organic anionic, non-ionic or mixed anionic non-ionic detergent coloured with a fugitive dye of the formula wherein M is a salt-forming cation, the aryls are unsubstituted or substituted benzene or naphthalene rings, x is 1 to 4 and n and n<SP>1</SP> are from 15 to 75, or a mixture of such dyes. The substituents are C 1 -C 4 alkyl, amino, hydroxyl or nitro, x is preferably 1 to 3 and the alkoxy is preferably ethoxy. The dyes do not stain clothing of natural or synthetic materials. Preferably the composition is in a particulate form in which over 80% of the particles are of 6 to 200 mesh and 0À1 to 20% of the particles are coloured particles of 6 to 140 mesh. The coloured particles are produced by coating the inorganic builder or filler component of the detergent composition with a water-soluble polymeric coating containing the dye. The coating material and the dye, dissolved in water containing a cosolvent such as propylene glycol are sprayed on to the selected inorganic particles in a tumbler drum. The coating may be polyacrylic acid, polyacrylamide, polyvinyl alcohol or a mixture thereof. A suitable composition contains 5 to 30% of organic detergent; 10 to 50% of inorganic and/ or organic builder; plus conventional additives and has a pH in aqueous solution of 6 to 10. Other non-fugitive dyes may be used to coat a small proportion of the particles of the composition in a different colour; provided the composition does not objectionally stain textiles when used in aqueous solution or paste form for cleaning.
