Abstract

1392989 Electronic watches RIEHL ELECTRONICS CORP I May 1972 [3 May 1971] 20061/72 Heading G3T An electronic timepiece includes a pulse generator and counter and a digital readout selectively displaying the time or date. The date indication is automatically reset at the end of a month. As shown in Fig. 1, a watch comprises electronic components sealed in a plastics block and inserted in a case. The main face of the watch forms a silicon solar cell 15, for charging nickel-cadmium cells forming a power supply. Three of the edges of the case are fitted with actuators 18 for reed switches or Hall effect devices which control the demand signals supplied to a digital readout in the form of four seven-bar modules 35-38 comprising light-emitting diodes or incandescent elements and located in the fourth edge of the watch case. Each module also includes a decimal point which can be independently illuminated. The decimal points 40 form a colon dividing the hours numerals from the minutes, and the point associated with module 35 indicates P.M. if time is being displayed in a twelve hour mode. A twenty four hour mode can also be selected. Other displays which may be selected are seconds, alone, and day and month numbers. In the latter case, the points associated with modules 35 and 38 give a binary indication of the year in a four year cycle. The electronic package, Figs. 9-20 (not shown) includes a quartz crystal oscillator supplying pulses to dividers and counters using integrated circuit logic elements. Devices are included to provide automatic resetting of the date numerals at the end of each month, taking into account 30-day months and leap years. Setting arrangements are provided enabling the watch to be synchronized with a whole minute signal by holding the seconds count at zero, and allowing the hours count to be changed with- . out stopping the days count, so that corrections for different time zones may be made. Filters are provided to prevent the receipt of multiple pulses from contract bounce during manual setting. The power supplied to the display is automatically reduced if the ambient light or the supply voltage falls, and the readout is covered with a red filter and circularly polarising material to maximize contrast.
