Abstract

1392983 Laminated spring units LORD CORP 18 April 1972 17956/72 Heading F2S A spring, e.g. for the suspension of a lightweight vehicle, has an elongate leaf 31 of non- extensible material, such as metal or fibre glass, and adhering to, as by bonding, a body 32 of natural or synthetic elastomer, such as polyurethane, and there is a neutral axis of the spring in flexure close to (in the leaf), or at the interface of the leaf and body so that upon flexure of the spring when, between its ends, the leaf 31 moves, relatively to its ends, away from the elastomeric body 32, it is subjected to tensile strain and the body 32 is subjected to compressive stress. The leaf 31 may be planar or, as shown, predeflected before the elastomer 32 is bonded to it. The latter may taper in thickness (possibly from the centre), towards its ends and with a parabolic contour as shown. For attachment, the spring has bushings 44 in end lugs of an elastomer and a bushing 42 in the body 32, possibly at the centre as shown. As indicated in Fig. 5, a spring may be supported on a structure S at one end and between its ends to support a load P at its other end. Instead it may support a load at both ends being itself supported between its ends or, conversely, it may be supported at its ends to support the load between its ends.
