Abstract
139,265. Hossack, J. G. Jan. 29, 1919. Electrodes; gas collectors. - The casing A, B, which also forms one electrode of the dry cell, is telescopic, the jelly electrolyte R being retained by a disk S in one end of the casing away from the carbon electrode L. When the cell is to be used, the two parts of the casing are pushed together, whereby the disk S is broken and the electrolyte caused to flow into the space between the electrode L and the casing. Several cells may be connected together to form a battery, accidental telescoping of the cases being prevented by a paper band round the part A. The electrolyte may be ammonium chloride or zinc chloride mixed with tragacanth. A washer 0 round the carbon electrode prevents the electrolyte from rising too far and forms a chamber P to receive gases evolved from the cell. The inner surface of the part B of the casing is covered with acid-proof varnish or paraffin wax. In a modification, the electrolyte is contained in a capsule placed in the part B, and the two parts A, B, instead of being telescopic, may screw one into another.
