Abstract

1392152 Rollers BARNES DRILL CO 5 June 1973 [14 Aug 1972] 26637/73 Heading F2U [Also in Division B2] A squeegee roller 49 for removing liquid carried over the surface of the revolving drum 19 of a magnetic separator used for cleaning liquid coolant of metal swarf is mounted on a shaft 50 carried by pivoted arms 51 which are biased against the drum 19 by coiled springs 56. A cam 60 on each arm 51 co-operates with a cam follower 61 mounted on the drum 19 so that the shaft 50 is lifted away from the drum once during each revolution of the drum, whereby the building up and wedging of swarf in front of the roller is prevented. The roller is of segmented form and comprises magnetic steel sleeves (70), Fig. 6 (not shown), carrying resilient coverings (71) and mounted loosely, i.e. with a clearance of about one eighth of an inch, on the shaft 50 by means of nylon bushes (73); thus, when the shaft 50 is lifted away from the drum 19 the roller itself is still held against the drum surface, by virtue of the magnetic attraction between the drum and the sleeve (71), with sufficient pressure to maintain some squeezing action but is relatively free to ride over any large piles of swarf on the drum surface (Fig. 7 to 8, not shown).
