Abstract

1391725 Modifying cellulose fibres; Absorbent products KIMBERLY-CLARK CORP 20 March 1972 13005/72 Headings D2B and D2W A method for producing modified cellulose fibres of improved absorbency comprises saturating cellulose pulp fibres with an aqueous phosphorylating solution; heating the saturated pulp to an elevated temperature to obtain phosphorylated cellulose fibres; washing the fibres with water to free them from reactant; converting the fibres to salt form with an alkali while dispersed in water; and drying the treated fibres in a manner which avoids interfibre bonding. Phosphorylation may be carried out using a solution of urea and phosphoric acid, phosphorous oxychloride alone or with pyridine, phosphoric acid, or dioxane, or an alkali metal salt of phosphoric acid. The phosphorylated fibres may be treated with an acid to convert them to an acid form prior to conversion to the salt form. The treated fibres may be dried using either solvent drying or freeze drying techniques. If ordinary evaporative drying techniques are used, the resulting fibres do not show improved absorbency, although they may be used as supplementary bonding agents in paper. The modified cellulose fibres of the invention may be used alone or blended with other fibres e.g. cotton, rayon, wood pulp in the manufacture of absorbent products.
