Abstract

1391499 Tunnelling machines NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 25 Sept 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 47380/72 Heading E1F [Also in Division F2] A double gate valve for passing material from a source at a high pressure to a low pressure delivery zone comprises an upwardly movable gate 52 at the inlet side of the valve, a second gate 54 at the outlet side of the valve, and guide means 63, 64 constraining the valves to slide in their respective planes between open and closed positions. Preferably the second gate moves downwards. Means 68, 104, 100 are provided for controlled venting to atmosphere of that part of the body containing the seat 66 for the first gate whilst maintaining the seat in air or in a materialfree liquid clear of the material entering the valve. The seal 69 between the bottom part of the valve body and the first gate 52 is backed by a chamber 74 adapted to be pressurized with a flow of material-free liquid whereby any leak past the seal is in an upwards direction to discourage the ingress into the seal of the material. The chamber 74 and the part of the valve body rearwards of the seal are connected by a pipe 400 so that liquid can be supplied from the chamber 74 to that part of the valve body between the gates. The valve can be incorporated in a bulkhead between the tunnelling head-containing part of a shield of a tunnelling machine such as disclosed in Specification 1083322, and the rear part of the shield.
