1391435 Dental apparatus C M W LABORATORIES Ltd 24 March 1972 [29 March 1971] 8109/71 Heading A5R A dental unit comprises a manifold module 8 incorporating respective fluid-conducting conduits for the supply of air 2, 3 and water 1 to and for receiving air exhaust 4 from dental instruments, each conduit leading to a respective coupling member 9 of a jet thereof located on one outer face of the manifold module for simultaneous releasable connection to a set of respective mating coupling members 11 or 21 on a manifold extension module 10, 13, 14 or 17, 18, 19 each coupling member 9 being of the type which seals itself on removal of the mating member. The conduits in module 8 may also be connected to a second set of self-sealing coupling members located on a second face of the module. The manifold extension module may be a dental instrument control module 17, 18, 19 or a linking extension module 10, 13, 14 having inlets 11 on one face and two sets of outlets 12, 20 allowing a plurality of linking modules to be connected in series to the module 8 for supplying a plurality of control modules therefrom. A high-pressure 3 and a low-pressure 2 air supply conduit may be provided together with a pedal control unit 6 having a valve 7 for controlling the speed of a dental drill. A control module 17 supplies air to a turbine-driven hand-piece via a connector 26 and a weight-responsive valve 22, serving also as a handpiece support and also operating a relay valve 23 in a water supply line including a needle valve 25. Connector 26 may also include electrical supplies and a fibre-optical light supply, either or both of which may be fed through the manifold 8 and extensions 10, 13, 14. The module 18 supplies a different type of hand-piece via a connector 28 and also has a water-control needle valve 31 and a handpiece support/weight-responsive valve 27 controlling relay valves 29, 30. The module 19 includes a support 32 and connector 33 for a dental spray, supplied with air via a non-return valve 35 and with water via a valve 34.
