1391077 Manufacture of veneer AARONSON BROS Ltd 19 June 1972 [9 July 1971] 32452/71 Heading B5L A method of forming a block of wood veneer laminations in which superposed wood veneer laminations have a curvature imposed upon them comprises pressing a batch of glued laminations 8 between upper and lower jigs 5, 1, of different curvatures, stopping pressing before the glue sets, adding a further batch of glued laminations 9, and pressing again until the glue is set. Several further batches of laminations may be added in sequence instead of just the one as shown, and after a certain number have been added the upper jig 5 may be replaced by one of shallower depth. The arrangement is such that the pressure is applied gradually to the laminations from the centre outwards, and the curvature of the uppermost lamination lies between that of the upper and lower jigs. As described the jigs are attached to the plates of a press and are covered with layers, e.g. 4, 7 of a resilient material, e.g. foamed polyurethane. The glue used may be a synthetic resin adhesive and may be set by heating. 40-50 layers may be present in each batch of laminations. The jigs may be U-section or sinusoidal and the upper one 5 may be attached to the press plate 14 by clips 15. After setting of the glue the block is trimmed square by a bandsaw and a thin wedge shaped portion removed therefrom so that when the block 16, Fig. 7, is cut into veneers by a horizontal blade 17 the cut is at a slight angle to the edge of each lamination and thus the veneers have the desired grain pattern.
