Abstract

1391041 Sonar fishing aids FRIED KRUPP GmbH 29 May 1973 [30 May 1972] 25388/73 Heading H4D To assist a fisherman to identify objectively the species of fish in a shoal located by a sonar system, the system has provision for interrupting the normal display of fish echoes, repeatedly displaying a stored sequence of echoes received in an interval up to the moment of interruption, and comparing by circuitry the latter echoes with echo replicas characteristic of known fish species, the replicas being selected on a trial basis from a store by means of a console under the fisherman's control. In use the system is first used to locate the shoal by horizontal sounding from a trawler. During this location the echoes received in several sounding periods are displayed on a CRT or echograph. A magnified partial-range display of the stored shoal echoes of the latest sounding period is then obtained by actuation of an "identification" switch and scale-changing device (which may include a "light stylus" for selecting that part of the normal echo display to be magnified). The scale change is linked with a reduction of the transmitted pulse duration and of the transmission period, and with an increase in the transmission signal frequency. The console includes a panel of illuminated keys corresponding to various possible fish species, or includes an equivalent optical indication of species selectable by a light stylus. A gating circuit controls the console such that only those species which could possibly be present, for the prevailing geographical location of the trawler, season of the year, time of day, water temperature and salinity (the latter two parameters being measured by a probe lowered from the trawler), can be selected on the console. When the fisherman selects one of the possible species the displayed echoes are compared with the replica echoes for that species. If there is good conformity of the echoes a lamp lights; if not, further selection and comparisons are made until good conformity is obtained. The system is then used for vertical sounding to determine the depth of the shoal. The resulting echo signals and those from a sounder on the trawl net are fed to a device for controlling the net position for aiming the net at the shoal. If no good conformity of the current shoal echo signals with the replicas is obtained during the above comparisons for any of the selections, the species of fish is identified by sampling the catch and the current echo signals are added as new replicas to the existing store of replicas.
