Abstract

1390890 Armouring ANACONDA CO 8 Aug 1973 [14 Aug 1972] 37601/73 Heading B3E Apparatus 10, Fig. 1, for applying armour strips 11 to an elongated core 12 comprises a plurality of supplies 13 of the strip and a supply 17 of the core, devices for advancing the core from the supply and for rotating the strip supplies around the core, a plurality of supply support brackets 34 and a like plurality of support arms 42, and a plurality of pairs of rolls 47, 48, 59, 61 mounted on the armour. The pairs of rolls are spaced apart a distance 49 to eliminate excessive friction and yet obivate twisting of the strip, and the arms 42 are sufficiently radially removed from the core to bend the strip beyond its elastic limit on leaving rolls 47, 48 after bending around roll 48. A spacer 51 for the strips comprises a disc having radial slots (52), Fig. 3 (not shown), mounted at an end 53 of a guide tube 19. The brackets 34 are supported on a disc 22 having clearance holes 29, 31, Fig. 4, co-operating with holes 32, 33 of the brackets. The arms 42 have lengthwise grooves 43, 44 for sliding engagement with plates 45, 46 of the roll mountings. A smoothing die 54 is mounted downstream of the spacer 51 to guide and support the cable 57 urged forward by a capstan 58. In a modification, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), a bracket (72) has a radial slot (73) to allow tilting of an arm (74) mounting the roller pairs, thus adjusting the radial distance of the arm from the core and the angle of the strip with the core.
