Abstract

1390668 Moulding filters NORIT NV 5 June 1972 [7 June 1971] 26202/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division C1] Shaped porous articles have an open structure of porous granules linked by fine particles of normally solid thermoplastic polymer, and are made from granules possessing an open porosity by heating a mass of the granules to a temperature above the initial point of the softening range of the polymer, mixing a stream of falling heated granules with a stream of falling polymer particles which have not been previously heated, collecting the resulting mass of granules having adherent polymer particles and shaping the mass utilizing minimum shearing forces so that the open porosity of the material is retained. Preferably the thermoplastic binder has a particle size of from 80 to 200 microns, and may be used in a proportion of from 10-20% by weight of the granules. The granules may be heated by a stream of hot gas. The binder used may be polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene with no more than 25% by weight of vinyl acetate. Planar panels of bonded particles may be made by collecting the composite particles on an advancing belt, levelling and compressing the web formed, severing pieces of desired size and cooling. In a preferred embodiment, the composite granules are collected on an imperforate belt of metal covered with a porous paper or polyester web running along with the belt, the web of granules levelled and passed supported by the paper or polyester web on to a second perforated metal belt, the web being cooled by passing cooling air through the web of particles, the web of paper or polyester and the perforated belt. If desired at least one major surface of the levelled particle web may be reheated to above the softening point of the binder. The porous particles used may be active carbon, ion exchange material, molecular sieves, lava, pumice or silica gel. Substantially all the pores of the independant particles are open to the ambient atmosphere.
