Abstract

1390595 Magnesia cement mortar J DANIELIS 26 Feb 1973 9317/73 Heading C3N A composition for making thin lightweight decorative facing sheet material comprises a mouldable paste of magnesium oxychloride, an inert finely divided filler consisting essentially of 2/3 to 1 volume of dry vegetable materials in particulate or fibrous form and 0 to 1/3 volume of perlite in particulate or flake form, to a total of 1 volume and a pigment selected from metallic oxide pigments and carbon black, the magnesium oxychloride being the reaction product of magnesium chloride and calcined magnesite in a water medium in which the magnesium chloride prior to reaction was present in an amount relative to the calcined magnesite, calculated on a substantially dry weight basis, 70-100%, the pigment being present in an amount relative to the dry calcined magnesite component of the magnesium oxychloride calculated on a substantially dry weight basis, and the filler being present in an amount of 150-250% relative to the calcined magnesite component of the magnesium oxychloride calculated on a substantially dry volume basis. The pigment may be iron oxide, zinc oxide or titanium oxide, and the vegetable material is preferably wood flour which may have a particle size of 60-100 U.S. mesh. Other vegetable fillers are hemp, ramie and sisal. The composition may be formed into a thin lightweight uniformly coloured decorative facing sheet material having a thickness of 1/8-1/2 inch.
