Abstract
1390372 Fixing developed electrographic images VARIAN ASSOCIATES 8 March 1972 [5 April 1971] 10864/72 Heading G2H A process for fixing a liquid toner developed electrographic image comprises passing an airstream over the image area so as to at least partially dry the image and subsequently applying radiant heat to the at least partially dried image to effect fixing. An electrographic web 3 comprising a conductive paper backing 4 and a dielectric film 5 is imaged at a station 2 whilst supported between a photo-conductive plate 6 (supported on a glass substrate 7) and a conductive backing plate 9. A potential is applied between a transparent electrode 8 (e.g. of tin oxide) and the plate 9 whilst the image to be recorded is projected on to the plate 6. The imaged web is severed at 17 and passed to a liquid development station where an electrically conductive perforated drum 21 is rotated at a greater velocity than the severed web portions to supply fresh toner to the image. Toner is supplied to the drum through a channel 22. The web portions then pass through squeegee rollers 26 to fixing station 27 through which they are guided by wire grids 34. Drying air is supplied from a blower 37 until the remanent liquid toner does not flow under the action of the air-stream. Subsequently the web sections are guided over infrared source 42 which fixes the developed images on the web 3. Polished reflectors 42, 43 and 44 shield the undried portions of the web section from the heat source.
