Abstract

1389800 Bonding rubber to metal YOKOHAMA RUBBER CO Ltd 4 Sept 1973 [8 Sept 1972] 41522/73 Headings C3E C3P and C3Q [Also in Division D1] A rubber composition comprising a vulcanizable rubber, sulphur, a cobalt and/or nickel salt of an organic acid and a 2,6-dimethylol-4-alkylphenol or a condensate thereof, represented respectively by the formulµ wherein R is an alkyl group and "n" is an integer of 1 or more, is bonded to a metal surface by vulcanizing the composition while it is in contact with said surface. Examples are given in which the metal surfaces are those of steel wire cords, or brass- or zinc-coated steel wire cords, and the rubber compositions contain carbon black, sulphur and (a) natural rubber, cobalt or nickel naphthenate, cobalt oleate or cobalt stearate and a condensate of 2,6-dimethylol-4-octylphenol in which "n" is 3 to 5; (b) natural rubber, cobalt naphthenate, the condensate as in (a) and quinone dioxime, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dithiomorpholine or dinitrobenzene; (c) natural rubber, synthetic polyisoprene, styrene-butadiene rubber, polybutadiene, ethylene-propylene-ethylidene norbornene rubber or isobutylene isoprene rubber, cobalt naphthenate and the said condensate; or (d) natural rubber, cobalt naphthenate, and the said condensate, a mixture of 2,6-dimethylol-4-t.butylphenol condensates in which "n" is from 3 to 5, 2,6-dimethylol-4-methylphenol, or 2,6-dimethylol-4- t.butylphenol.
