Abstract

1338930 Bonding rubber containing a boron compound to a metallic material BRIDGESTONE TIRE CO Ltd 10 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970 16 June 1971] 57441/71 Headings C3E C3P and C3Q A vulcanizable rubber composition containing at least one compound selected from boric acids, metal salts thereof and boric acid anhydride is bonded to a metallic material by being vulcanized while in contact with said material. Specified materials are copper, copper alloys, e.g. bronze and brass and other metals coated therewith. Examples are given in which (a) a natural rubber formulation containing (i) ortho- or (ii) meta-boric acid, (iii) boric anhydride, (iv) zinc borate, (v) manganese borate, (vi) calcium borate, (vii) lead borate, (viii) cobalt borate or (ix) sodium borate is bonded to brass-plated steel cords; (b) a styrenebutadiene rubber formulation containing one of compounds (i) to (vii) and (c) a natural rubber/styrene-butadiene rubber formulation containing one of compounds (i) to (iv) are similarly bonded to the cords. The boron compound may be pulverized. The rubber-cord assemblies are kept in a humid atmosphere before being vulcanized.
