Abstract

1,185,896. Rubber bound antioxidants. NATURAL RUBBER PRODUCERS' RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 9 July, 1968 [11 Sept., 1967], No. 41448/67. Headings C3C, C3E and C3P. Antioxidants are chemically united with the macromolecule of an unsaturated rubber by reaction of the rubber with an aromatic mononitroso compound whose nucleus contains a group of formula -NR 1 R 2 or -OR 3 wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are the same or different and are hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl groups optionally containing one or more non-carbon atoms, or R 1 and R 2 together with the nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring which may contain one or other hetero atoms. The reaction preferably takes place during vulcanization but may take place in the presence of fillers &c. Suitable rubbers are polybutadiene, natural or synthetic polyisoprene, polychloroprene, butadiene styrene copolymer, and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer. The polymers may be formed into foams. Suitable nitrosocompounds include p-nitrosodiphenylamine, N,N-dimethyl-p-nitrosoaniline, and pnitrosophenol. Many others are exemplified.
