Abstract

1389636 Cathode constructions PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 March 1973 [18 March 1972] 12413/73 Heading H1D An electrode for a short-arc gas discharge lamp has a closed conical end with a recess 14 located on the axis and containing thorium metal 15, the recess extending to such a distance from the apex 13 of the cone that during operation of the lamp transport of thorium metal to the apex is mainly effected by diffusion through the electrode material. The electrode may be manufactured by providing on the axis of a cylindrical rod or wire of tungsten, thoriated tungsten, or an alloy consisting mainly of these materials, a narrow rectangular slot which extends radially and axially to the surface, partly or entirely filling the slot with metallic thorium e.g. in the form of a plate, closing the slot by a pressure welded joint 16 and finaly grinding the end to conical shape. The electrode is arranged as a cathode opposite a tungsten anode in a short-arc xenon discharge lamp (Fig. 1, not shown).
