Machine cutters, sharpening in situ.-Relates to a sharpening- device for the knives of slicing - machines, and comprises a sharpener in which means are provided for preventing the grinding-wheels from being brought into and out of the sharpening position in contact with the blade other than by movement directly towards and from the lateral faces of the blade. The sharpener comprises a casing 5, in which are mounted two spindles 7 carrying grinding-wheels 8 adapted to be moved, in the direction of their axes, into and out of contact with the blade 13 by means of a cam 10 operatively rotatable by means of a handle 11 extending through the wall of the casing; the grinding- wheels are moved towards the blade by springs and away therefrom positively by the cam. The casing is carried by a standard 3 slidable in the bored end of a post 1 secured to the frame of the machine, its lowest position, Fig. 3, corresponding to the position of the grinders opposite the edge of the blade, being determined by an adjustable screw 4. When in this position, a notch 21 in a lever 14, pivoted at 15 to the casing and acted upon by a spring 16, engages the bevelled periphery of a disk 19 secured to the post 1, and, the lever 11 being moved to bring the grinders into contact with the blade, the casing cannot be raised owing to the contact of a bearing foot 22 of the lever with the lateral face of the cam, which prevents disengagement of the notch from the disk. In order to raise the grinders, the cam must be rotated to remove these laterally from the blade, such rotation bringing an opening 25 in the cam opposite the foot 22, and thus allowing movement of the lever 14 by the operator to disengage the notch from the disk, whereby the casing is free to be raised. When in the raised position, the grinders cannot be moved to approach the blade owing to the engagement of the foot 22 with a flat shoulder 30 at one side of the opening 25 in the cam, which prevents rotation thereof; the casing may be maintained in the raised position by means of a pin 26 thereon, which is adapted to rest on the disk 19, and a hole 27 in this permits of the lowering of the casing and also serves to position it during such lowering. A depression 28 in the disk assists in locating the casing in the inoperative position with the grinders turned away from the knife.
