This invention relates to a machine adapted to cut cylinder or equivalent keys by code.
One object is to provide such a machine wherein the blanks may be operated according to the depth of cut and also operated according to the space between cuts, in a novel, simple, and efficient manner.
Another object is to provide a novel construction wherein if desired, a pattern key to be duplicated, may be fastened and coact with a guide.
Still further, it is aimed to provide a construction wherein a laterally movable carriage is provided which has a key holder movable toward and away from the cutter, in combination with means operable to move the carriage to control the space between the cuts.
Various additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 designates a suitable bed plate or base provided with a suitable bearing 11 which journals a shaft 12 having a cutter 13 provided thereon, preferably removably, in any suit- The shaft 12 may be driven from any suitable source of power, for instance by a driven belt applied to a pulley 14 keyed to the shaft 12.
Movable longitudinally of the base 10 is a carriage 15. Such carriage is rigid with a rod 16 which is both slidably and rotatably mounted in ears 17 and 18, integral with said base, a set screw 19 being threaded in the ear 17 for binding against the rod 16, when desired, to rigidly secure the carriage in place.
Slidably mounted transversely of the carriage is a holder 22 for a key blank 23. This holder may consist of a block 24: which is rigid with a rod 25, having its axis at right angles to the axis of the cutter, the rod 25 being slidably mounted in an car 26 on the carriage and a bracket 27 also preferably integral with the carriage. A suitable clamp plate 28 engageable with the block 24: and adapted to be clamped against the same by means of a screw 29, which clamps the key blank 23 between the same and the block and in position to be moved relatively to and be cut by the rotatable cutter 13.
In order to move the block 24 transversely of the carriage, that is toward and away from the cutter 13 so that the blank 23 may be engaged and disengaged by and with the cutter 13. To this end the bracket 27 has a cylinder 30 in which a sleeve 31 is loosely slidable. Rod 25 passes through said sleeve and beyond the same has a nut 32 adjustably threaded thereon. Cylinder or sleeve 31 has an annular groove 33 which is engaged by a pin or lug 34 eccentrically provided on an upright stud 35 ournaled in the bracket 27, and centrally of a dial or code plate 36 on the bracket. Said code plate 36 has various figures or calibrations 37 thereon corresponding to different depths which the cutter 13 could cut the key 23, the necessary adjustment of the block relatively to the cutter being initially made, and wear being taken up, through the adjustment of the nut 32 with relation to the sleeve 31. An operating handle 40 is removably carried by the shank 35, being secured by a screw 41 for instance, and the same has a pointed end 42 adapted to coact with the figures or calibrations 37, whereby the handle also serves as a pointer. Rotation of the handle 40, due to the eccentric connection of the pin 34 with the sleeve 31, serves to slide the sleeve 31 and cause engagement of the latter with the nut 32, thus unitarily moving the rod 25 and block 24: and the blank 23 clamped to the latter. By the means just described, the depth of cut by cutter 13 on the blank 23 may be governed, it being realized also that the adjustment permits the partsto be readjusted to compensate for reduction in 10C diameter of the cutter 13 after the same is sharpened from time to time.
The bracket 18 has an integral dial or plate 43 at the top thereof, which may be provided with indications or calibrations 44 corresponding with the spacing desired in making the different cuts on the key blank 23.. A shank 45 is journaled in the disk 43, being held from displacement by a screw 46 threaded to the disk and engaging an annular groove 47 in the shank.
The lower end of the shank is formed into a crank 48 having a depending pin 49 which engages in an annular groove 50 in a nut or abutment 51 adjustably screw threaded on the rod 16. ;Removably extending through the shank 45'is a handle 52, the same being secured in place adjustably by a screw 53 threaded to the shank. One end of the handle at 54 constitutes a pointer for movement to the different positions 44. It will thus be seen that movement of the handle 52 rotates the shank 45 "and the latter through its crank connection with the shaft 16, moves the same longitudinallythus properly spacing the key blank 23 relatively .to the cutter. It being realized, that the marks 44 coact with the pointer 54 according to the different distances or spaces desired between cuts.
The sleeve 31 may be secured rigidly in different positions through the engagement of a set screw-55 therewith, such set screw being screw threaded in the cylinder 30.
To aid in initially positioning the blank 28, a gauge rod is journaledin lugs61 integral with the block 24. Such rod has a gauge finger 62 thereon. Such finger 62 is normally out of the blank 23 but the rod 60 is rotatable so as to move the finger into position to engage a shoulder on the key, whereby the latter will be accurately positioned for clamping. A coil spring 63 surrounds rod 60 being fastened theretoand to one of the lugs 61,.thespring urging the finger 62 out of the plane of the blank 23 so that it will not normally interfere therewith and so that after the blank is positioned, the finger will return to a non-interfering position. To facilitate manual manipulation, one end of rod 60 may be knurled as at 64.
'While the machine is primarily adapted for cutting keys by code, it is also adapted to duplicate keys and for instance the pattern keyshown at 65. To this end, a clamp 28 like that at 28 is adapted to secure the key 65 in place, through the coaction of a screw 29 engaging the block 24. It will be noted that the rod 60 has a finger 62 thereon adapted, to coact with a shoulder on the pattern key 65 like the coaction between finger 62 and the blank 23.
The pattern key at the cut'edge thereof is adapted to follow a guide member 66 which is supported in any stationary manner on the F bed or' base 10and for instance by a. holder 67.

69 designates a spring secured at one end to a lug 70 on carriage 15, and at its other end to a bracket 71 secured to the threaded end of the rod 25, this spring functioning, when the machine is used for duplicating keys, to hold the pattern key against the guide member 66 while the handle 52 is manipulated to actuate the carriage 15 to hold the key blank against thecutter 13. v

A machine of the class described, in combination with a cutter, a key holder, a rod ex tending therefrom at a right anxle to the axis of the cutter,a sleevethrough which the rod passes, an abutment means on the rod coacting with the sleeve, eccentric means operable to slide said sleeve comprising a'shank having eccentric connection with the sleeve, a pointer carried by the shank, in combination with an index coacting with the pointer, a carriage on which said holder is disposed, said carriage having a supporting portion for said index andhaving a recess below the supporting portion housing said sleeve, said rod slidably connectingj the holder to the carriage, and means operable to move the carriage in a different direction from that in i which the holder moves. 8
