Machine cutters, grinding in situ. - The rotary knife 9 of a slicing machine is sharpened bv means of a grinding element 1 which is spring pressed against the knife and is looked automatically against movement in the direction away from the knife. In the known apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the grinding wheel is moved up to the knife by a spring 8 when the cam shaft 11 is rotated by a handle 10. The finishing wheel 2 is similarly actuated. According to the invention the grinding spindle is mounted in a sliding sleeve 18, Fig. 2, and is quickly detachable by means of a spring-retained ball device 19. A ball 16 is interposed between the spindle and the sleeve 18. An arm 23 pivoted between extensions of the sleeve 18 is provided with a friction surface 25 eccentric to the pin 22 and engages a cam 12 on the shaft 11. The foot of the cam 23 engages a projection 29. In operation, when the cam 12 is rotated, the grinding- wheel is moved by the spring 8 into contact with the knife and on further movement of the shaft 11 the cam 12 leaves the arm 23 which is then moved by a spring 24 to wedge the surface 25 tightly in the bore of the support 7 and prevent any backward movement of the grinding-wheel. In a modification, Fig. 4, a pin 28 screwed into the end of the member 18 passes through a hole in a boss 26 on the arm 23. When the cam 12 leaves the arm 23 after the grinding wheel has engaged the knife, a spring 27 causes the boss to rock about the point of the projection 29 and the boss then becomes jammed in the bore and prevents backward movement of the grinding wheel until the arm 23 is again operated by the cam to withdraw the wheel from operative position. The invention is also applicable to the finishing- wheel 2.
