Abstract

1389035 Extruding ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB 26 July 1972 [27 July 1971] 34863/72 Heading B3P A tubular copper billet is formed into a tube by heating the billet and hydrostatically extruding it through a die from which it is led to a cooling zone spaced from the die sufficiently to allow recrystallization of the copper before cooling. The copper tube is guided from the die by a tube 2 which is supplied with inert gas, e.g. nitrogen from a cylinder 4 near the die. The guide tube 2 has one or more cooling units 10 near its outlet which spray the tube with water. The water is collected in a drainage device 14 around the guide tube 2 which is perforated in this area. A plug may be provided in the end of the copper tube to prevent ingress of air or water. The billet is initially heated to above 250‹ C., and the extrusion ratio is greater than 200 : 1. In one example the initial temperature is about 350‹ C., the ratio about 500 : 1. The extrusion pressure 10-15 kbar and the cooling units are 30 metres from the die which at an extrusion speed of 15 m./sec. allows 2 seconds for the recrystallization. The cooled extruded tube is directed to a coiler 3.
