Abstract

1388252 Feeding webs HUNTER ENG CO Inc 5 Feb 1973 [18 Feb 1972] 5505/73 Heading B8R In a method of and apparatus for continuously feeding a web, e.g. aluminium or steel strip, through a processing section 12, e.g. a roller leveller, stretcher leveller or temper rolling device, which would mar the web if feed were stopped, a first and a second accumulator are provided one uptsream and one downstream of the processing section and means are provided for stopping the web and performing a servicing operation thereon, at one or other ends of the apparatus whilst maintaining a relatively slow web feed through the processing section. As described, the servicing operation consists of splicing a new web from a braked coil 14 to an expiring web at a joining station 17 and subsequently cropping off the join at a station 82 and winding the new web on to a new driven coil replacing a full coil 86. The web is fed through the apparatus by driven rollers which are capable of decelerating the web to a "creep speed" through the processing section 12 and a delivery section 13 whilst stopping the web in an entry section 11, a clamp preventing further web movement whilst splicing is effected. During this time web held in the upstream accumulator 26 is fed through the processing section. The clamp is released after the stopped web has been tensioned and the join is transferred to station 82 at an intermediate speed whilst accumulator 26 is re-filled with web. The web is then decelerated again and stopped and clamped in the delivery section 13 for cropping and replacement of the full coil 86, web from the processing section 12 being accumulated in the downstream accumulator 60. Finally, the web is tensioned, released and accelerated up to normal speed and the web accumulator 60 is emptied. In an alternative embodiment the web is stopped simultaneously in the entry and delivery sections, web being fed from the accumulator 26, to the accumulator 60 at a slow feed rate during this time. The processing section may include edge trimmers, cleaning and drying devices and tensioning devices. The accumulators may be hydraulically operated. Tensioning devices (44), (46), (48) and (52), (54), (56), Figs. 1A, 1B (not shown), maintain constant web tension through the processing section.
