Abstract

1388181 Hydrodynamic couplings SELFCHANGING GEARS Ltd 8 May 1973 [11 Feb 1972] 6480/72 Heading F2C The fluid flow between pump and turbine elements 1, 2 of a hydrodynamic coupling for a motor vehicle is varied by a baffle 3 rotationally fast with the turbine element 2 (or pump 1) and comprising a plurality of a baffle plates 4, 5, 6 urged by springs 12 into their radially outermost, flow restricting, positions and moved radially inwardly by centrifugal force acting on weights 9 fast with the baffle plates. The baffle plates 4, 5, 6 are annular and have a circular outer periphery and an eccentric oval inner periphery. An arm 4b, 5b, 6b integral with each baffle plate is connected to the associated centrifugal weight 9. At low turbine speeds the springs 12 urge the arms 4b, 5b, 6b towards the coupling axis whereupon the portions of the baffle plates diametrically opposite the arms are moved radially outwardly into the working circuit to restrict flow therein. When the turbine speed exceeds a predetermined value the centrifugal weights 9 move the arms 4b, 5b, 6b radially outwardly and thus withdraw the projecting portions of the baffle plates to increase flow in the working circuit.
