Abstract

1388159 Moulding superplastic alloy sheets; making decorative panels ISC ALLOYS Ltd 30 May 1973 [14 June 1972] 27891/72 Headings B3A B3V and B3Q Superplastic alloy sheet conformed to a mould surface is removed from the mould and then, while suitably supported, subjected to a temperature of 180-220‹ C. to remove warping or distortion. In an example, a wall panel at 250‹ C. was moulded for 12 minutes using compressed air at 60 lbs. per square inch. The panel was distorted upon removal from the mould and was stored, being subsequently placed on a flat hot plate at 200‹ C. and free from distortions within 15-20 minutes; In a further example, a sheet was moulded for 6 minutes at 250‹ C. and at 150 lbs. per square inch air pressure. The moulding was removed by cooling it around the peripheral flange and allowing it to fall on to and be distorted by a lower platen. The distortion was removed by inverting the hot moulding and cooling it for 1 hour on another mould of complementary shape. Heat treatment of the moulded sheet preferably takes at least 10 minutes in an oven, or heat remaining after the moulding operation may be used. Either surface of a moulded sheet may be cooled by air or water to facilitate its removal from the mould after pressure or vacuum forming. Zinc-aluminium alloys are referred to containing 15-40 weight per cent Al, preferably 18-30%, with or without up to 0À5% of, for example, Cu or Mg. Methods of removing mouldings are acknowledged in which the formed component is heated above the superplastic range, e.g. by contact with a heated die at the end of forming. Alternatively, contact with a cold die may destroy superplasticity, or both the component and die are cooled.
