Abstract

1388122 Obtaining high vacua by adsorption L'AIR LIQUIDE SOC ANON POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE 28 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971 2 April 1971] 9134/72 Heading F1N A device for transferring gas from a chamber 22, via an adsorption compartment 1, to a further location through conduit 24, comprises pipes 9a, 9b, 9c inter-connecting tanks 7, 8 which are respectively connected to outlet and inlet conduits 12, 11, tapes 15a, 15b being interwoven around pipes 9a, 9b, 9c and being of an adsorbent material. Cryogenic liquid flows through the pipes 11, 12, 9a, 9b, 9c and tanks 7, 8 continuously throughout each gas transfer cycle. Tapes 15a, 15b are made of wire 14 into which are embedded particles 13 of an adsorbent substance. By putting a voltage across the ends of the wire via leads 17, 18 the adsorbent substance 13 can be heated since the heat generated is greater than the cooling power of the cryogenic liquid. This heat is only applied for a predetermined time during each cycle. Thus, with the cryogenic liquid acting through the pipes so that only a cooling effect is present the adsorbent substance 13 has its temperature lowered to an adsorption point, whereupon valve 23 is opened and gas from chamber 22 adsorbed into substance 13. Then valve 23 is closed and the wire 14 and substance 13 heated to a desorption temperature, thus overcoming the continuing cooling effect of the cryogenic liquid. The gas is thus desorbed from substance 13 and valve 25 opened to permit the desorbed gas to flow to another location. In a further embodiment Figs. 3 to 6, (not shown) the adsorbent substance is in the form of strips held between parallel plates and electrically series connected. Alternatively, the strip can be thickly wound round a central conduit for the cold liquid, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown). The device can also be used, usually in combination with similar devices, as a compression in a Joule-Thomson refrigerator system, Figs.9, 10, 11 (not shown).
