Abstract
1309426 Refrigerating L'AIR LIQUIDE SOC ANON POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE 13 March 1970 [14 March 1969] 12297/70 Heading F4H In apparatus for cooling a body 30 by the negative heat of desorption of a gas, e.g. a He and Hz and/or neon mixture in columns 1, 2, each comprising thermally insulated chambers 3, 4 and 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> respectively, provided with adsorbent material 13, 13<SP>1</SP> for the gas fixedly mounted on supports conducting heat radially of the columns. The gas is sucked cyclically from the warm end of one column and is delivered to the warm end of the other through circuits comprising conduits 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, heat exchangers 8, 8<SP>1</SP> and a common heat exchanger 10 and via valves 11, 12 and 11<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>1</SP> respectively to a compressor 13. The flow is reversed by opening and closing valves 11, 11<SP>1</SP> and 12, 12<SP>1</SP> alternately. Heat exchange occurs within each column by the flow of a further gas, e.g. He, in a closed circuit comprising coils 28, 28<SP>1</SP> in the chambers 3, 3<SP>1</SP> with an external connecting tube 29 between the columns which tube cools the body 30. The helium in coils 28, 28<SP>1</SP> is always circulated in a direction opposite to the flow of adsorption gas in the columns by means 24 or 25 immersed in a bath 16 of liquid nitrogen and also passes through the heat exchangers 8, 81 and chambers 4, 4<SP>1</SP>. The liquid nitrogen from the bath 16 also flows through tubes 15, 151 and chambers 4, 4<SP>1</SP> for vaporization in order to absorb heat generated therein during the adsorption phase and through pipes 17, 17<SP>1</SP> to coils 18, 18<SP>1</SP> in the heat exchanger 10 before exhaust to atmosphere through valves 19, 19<SP>1</SP>. The tank 16 has a safety vent 20 passing to atmosphere through the heat exchanger 10. In a modification the adsorption-desorption gas may pass directly from one column to another through a capillary tube which is used to cool the body 30.
