1388005 A machine for packing filled bags into cartons BRITISH HARTFORD-FAIKMONT Ltd 1 Nov 1972 [3 Nov 1971] 50412/72 Heading B8C In a machine for packing at least two cartons at a time with layers of filled bags the cartons in groups of at least two are moved in periodic shuttling motion. Successively through a carton opening station 2, a cutting station 4 for severing the endmost pairs of bags from two adjacent strips of bags and pushing them into a corresponding pair of open cartons located therebeneath until each carton is filled with layers of flat bags, and a third unit where the cartons are closed. The lowermost carton of each stack of collapsed cartons 8<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>1</SP> in two magazines 3, is picked off by a corresponding one of a pair of suction grippers 12, 12 as the latter are rotated upward from their lower position, Fig. 2, their upward rotation also actuating, through a lever and push-rod mechanism 31, 43, 45, 47, a carton holder and pusher unit 48. As the grippers 12 are lowered each carton is opened and is placed on a pair of guide strips 50, 50<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, arranged on both sides of a conveyer 13 which is adapted to move the cartons, in steps, two at a time, along the strips 50, 50. The conveyer 13, Fig. 9, divided into individual sections 15 by means of walls 14, is movable back and forth by a pneumatic motor 16 as it is simultaneously moved down and up respectively by a frame 22-28 operated by a cam mechanism 29-31. Side-by-side strips of filled bags 60, previously filled in a filling machine, not shown, are urged forward by a belt drive 63 into the unit 4 where the strips are divided by a spring-loaded cutting blade 58 and a counter blade 59 mounted at the end of a feed gulley 60, the severed bags being successively pushed down through openings slightly smaller than the flat area of a bag by a thrust beam 7 and unto a corresponding open carton resting therebelow on the strips 50, 50. The blade 58 and the thrust beam 7 are reciprocated by commonly driven respective cam mechanisms 63, 69. A pair of vertically reciprocable roof-shaped, plates 72 fold down the two side flaps 8a of each of the pair of cartons, simultaneously the corresponding lid 8b is pressed, by a pivotally mounted boss 80, on a rigid beam 81 to fold down the tuck-in edge of the lid. Subsequently an additional pivotally mounted arm 83 with a guide plate 84 presses the folded edge of the lid 8b into the carton 8 the lid being slotted at its sides to hook into the side flaps. The strips 50, 50 are provided with clamps to hold the cartons still while the conveyer 13 is being retracted.
