Abstract
1387759 Solid phase preparation of polyesters IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 July 1973 [21 July 1972 14 Nov 1972] 32501/73 and 32502/73 Divided out of 1387335 Heading C3R A process for preparing a polyester comprises reacting an aromatic dicarboxylic acid in the solid state with a diol or a diol monoacylate, the reaction conditions being controlled so that throughout the reaction a major part of the reaction mass forms a solid phase. The reaction may be carried out under fluidized bed conditions with the diacid in particulate form and the diol or diol monoacylate in the vapour state, preferably in a chemically inert carrier gas, e.g. nitrogen. The examples describe reacting terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol. The following are also described; (a) reaction of ethylene glycol with naphthalene - 2,6 and 2,7 - dicarboxylic acid, 1,2-diphenoxy-ethane and butanep,p<SP>1</SP> - dicarboxylic acid, biphenyl - 4,41- dicarbocylic acid, diphenyl sulphone-4,41-dicarboxylic acid, bibenzyl-4,41-dicarboxylic acid, stilbene - 4,4<SP>1</SP> - dicarboxylic acid, 1,2 - di - pcarboxy - benzoyloxyethane and 1,6 - di - pcarboxybenzamidohexane, (b) reaction of 1,3- propanediol with biphenyl-4,4<SP>1</SP>-dicarboxylic acid and diphenyl sulphone-4,4<SP>1</SP>-dicarboxylic acid and (c) reaction of 2-hydroxyethyl acetate with terephthalic acid.
