Abstract

1387673 Heat exchangers SOC ANON DES USINES CHAUSSON 8 Aug 1972 [9 Aug 1971 22 Sept 1971] 37034/72 Heading F4S A heat exchanger assembly (e.g. in a vehicle), comprises externally finned tubes 1, 2 extending between headers 7 to each of which is connected by means of lugs 6, an intermediate plate 4 having means for fixing and locating to the assembly two lateral plates 24 which press on to the tube fins. The arrangement is intended to provide an assembly sufficiently rigid to dispense with holding fixtures m during the brazing step. As shown, the tubes 1, 2 are of rectangular cross-section and may have internal fin elements 28. The external fins comprise corrugated strips 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b and an intermediate plate 3 may be placed between the fins la, 2b of adjacent tubes. The lugs 6 on the intermediate plates 4 are spot-welded to the headers 7. The fixing of the lateral plates 24 is effected by tabs 19 in co-operation with slots 27 in the plates 24, location being assisted by bosses 21 on the plates 4 fitting into corresponding apertures 26 in the plates 24. Other fixing arrangements for the plates 24 may comprise a co-operating lugs (29, 30, Fig. 5), on both the plates 4 and 24 adapted to receive a locating pin (31); b bent-over lugs (32, Figs. 6 and 7), on the plate 4, apertures (33) in which are fitted over corresponding protrusions (36) at the ends of plates 24. The header covers 15 rest on ledges 14 formed at the open end of each header box 7, the covers being secured in position by the bending over of tabs 13 on the header box (see Fig. 3), Pipes 17 (and 17a, Figs 4 and 8), convey fluid to or from the heat exchanger, and a sleeve (42, Fig. 8), may interconnect the pipes 17a of adjacent heat exchangers where two or more of these are interconnected to form a larger unit. In such a unit the internal fin elements 28 may be of different length or form in the respective heat exchangers. The heat exchanger may be mounted from extensions (not shown), of the intermediate plates 4 or by means of pins or hooks projecting from the bosses 21 on the plates 4.
