Abstract
1387550 Seawater battery ESB Inc 4 Dec 1973 56136/72 Heading H1B A seawater battery comprises a plurality of plate-shaped cells bound together by a wrapping 70 and formed from moulded plastics components 14, 16. Figs. 1, 2 show three components 16a, 14, 16 comprising the left-hand end cell of the battery of Fig. 3, the remaining three cells of the battery each comprising the component 14 and the right-hand component 16 of Fig. 1. Component 14 has three ducts 26, 30, 32 extending between its opposite faces, a cavity 15 formed by end wall 22, circuitous ports 28, 33 connecting the ducts 26, 32 to the cavity 15, openings 34, 34a in the wall and pins 24 integral with and extending from the wall. The anode plate 12, which may be of Al, Mg or Zn, has holes 40 for mounting on the pins 24 and holes 42, 42a in alignment with the openings 34, 34a. The cathode plate 10 is of a metal halide, preferably lead or silver chloride, and is spaced by the heads of the pins 24 from the anode 12 to form an electrolyte space 56. Each end component 16, 16a has ducts 26a, 30a, 32a and an end wall corresponding to wall 22 of component 14. The end wall of the right-hand component 16 of Fig. 1, forms an electrolyte reservoir 50 connected to the ducts 30a, 32a by ports 52, 33a. In operation, the battery gases leave through the ducts 32, 32a, fresh electrolyte enters through ducts 30a, 30, electrolyte containing reaction products from the anodes leaves through ducts 26, 26a and fresh electrolyte enters the spaces 56 by passing from the reservoirs 50 through the openings 34, 34a.
