1379846 Gas diffusion electrodes LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GmbH 11 July 1972 [12 July 1971] 32390/72 Addition to 1317790 Heading H1B A gas diffusion electrode for a cell having an acid electrolyte comprises a steel sheet 2 of mesh construction and provided with apertures 3 the sheet being encased in foamed graphite frame 4 having a recess 5 to accommodate catalyst layer 6, frame 4 further having troughs 8, 9 formed therein to provide channels for circulating electrolyte and being coated with an insulating layer 10. A battery of cells using such electrodes may be assembled as shown with the frames 4 insulated from each other by the abutting regions of insulating layers 10 and connected in series, the long narrow channels 8, 9 providing a high ohmic path and preventing short-circuiting of the cells through the electrolyte. Electrolyte is circulated to chambers 13, 13<SP>1</SP> by means of inlet and outlet ducts 11, 12 formed by register. ing insulation-coated passages through frames 4. Chambers 15, 15<SP>1</SP> are gas chambers.
