Abstract

1421702 Sodium-sulphur batteries COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 27 Feb 1974 [28 Feb 1973] 8999/74 Heading H1B A battery of the Na-S type, Figs. 1, 2, comprises anode compartments 8 and cathode compartments 10 of prismatic cross-section formed by walls 12, 20 of beta alumina constituting the electrolyte. A stainless steel tank 2 containing liquid sodium constitutes the negative terminal and communicates with the compartments 8 through apertures 4. The compartments 10 contain liquid sulphur or sodium polysulphides impregnated into graphite felt (not shown) and each compartment has a conductor rod 14 of chrome-plated steel connected to a conductor plate 16 forming the positive terminal. Plates 6, 18 are of alpha alumina or mullite and are sealed by glass to the ends of the walls 12, 20, (Fig. 5, not shown). Alternative cathode active material is phosphorus or selenium or alkaline salts of these elements. The anode and cathode compartments 8, 10 may take alternative forms.
