Abstract

1516638 Alkali metal-sulphur cells CHLORIDE SILENT POWER Ltd 18 Nov 1975 [28 Nov 1974] 51637/74 Heading H1B The operating cycle of an alkali metal (Na)-S cell comprising, e.g. tube 2 of beta-alumina containing Na with a current collector 5 having a corrugated portion 6 of insulating material, and a steel plate 7 spaced from the tube 2, is controlled by a conductor 9 and portion 6. Discharge occurs through a resistor 11 until the sodium falls below the conductor 9, then discharge occurs through an external load until the Na level reaches insulating portion 6. The battery is then recharged, until the Na again reaches the conductor 9. A similar construction (Fig. 2, not shown) has the sulphur within the beta-alumina tube, and conducting rods extend into the Na reservoir. In a further modification (Fig. 3, not shown) a group of Na-S cells are controlled by a cell in which Na is transferred ionically from one compartment to another through a beta-alumina tube.
